Food for Political Thought

We all remember a particular scene in a movie that has had a major impact on us or hearing a speaker at a ceremony give that speech that will always stay with you. Perhaps you remember a protest song or attending a political rally that made a lasting impression.

Here are some interesting and provocative video clips, songs and other media snippets that will entertain you, but also make you think. Hopefully, some of them will cause you to have a strong reaction - that’s the point.

Honest Political Ads - Gil Fulbright for Senate

Submitted by: Represent.Us

Source: Gil Fulbright

Premiered: YouTube, Jul 9, 2014

COMMENTS: Gil Fulbright was running for Senate against Mitch McConnell and Alison Lundergan Grimes, when this ad was made. This ad is considered one of the most comical but probably most honest political ad's to date.

Please Don't Vote - A Message From The Republican Party

Submitted by: The Young Turks

Source: YouTube

Premiered: Oct 27, 2014

COMMENTS: A great example of political satire, this video from The Young Turks, exagerates the Right-wing's desire to hope for a low liberal voter turnout, which ironicly did happen in the 2014 election which caused both houses to be controled by the Republican Party.

The Undecided Voter

Submitted by: Eve A., NJ

Source: Family Guy (clip posted on Hulu/YouTube)

Premiered: May 13th, 2007 (Season 5, Episode 17)

COMMENTS: The hilarious and popular animated sitcom entitled Family Guy focuses in on many aspects of politics and succeeds at poking fun! Whether it is George W. Bush playing with a slinky or main character Peter Griffin joining the Tea Party movement, Family Guy never hesitates to “go there” which is what makes it such an incredible and innovative show. This clip is featured in the episode “It Takes a Village Idiot, and I Married One.” Peter’s wife, Lois Griffin, decides to run against Mayor Adam West, and attempts to persuade members of the community to vote for her.

State of the Union (1948)

Submitted by: R. Luebke

Source: Turner Classic Movies

Premiered: Washington, D.C.: 7 Apr 1948

COMMENTS: Yes it is very old school but it speaks to our generation who want to demand more from all of our politicians, no matter which party. Starring Spencer Tracy as a businessman who is recruited to seek the GOP presidential nomination and Katharine Hepburn as his estranged wife who tries to keep him idealistic, this Frank Capra movie may be the best political movie of all, combining the American hunger for authentic values with Americans’ belief in the rottenness of the political process. Perhaps no other movie suggests as well our hope for an apolitical politics or our own political schizophrenia.
